Diego Velazquez had been tried over 1m2½f and 1m4f in June with his trainer now admitting he got it wrong. On July 18th he had a comfortable win in the Meld Stakes (GR3) at Leopardstown at a distance of 9f. In August he went to Saratoga in the USA and was favourite for a GR1, only for the race to be called off due to a water logged course. Returning to Leopardstown he went to post a money on favourite at the Solonaway Stakes (GR2) over a mile and ran out a comfortable winner. His trainer now says that he is a speed horse, being at his best over a mile but might get up to 1m2f. Like his illustrious brother Broome he is now likely to travel the world with his trainer suggesting he could go for either the GR1 Breeders Cup Mile in the USA or the GR1 Cox Plate in Melbourne.
Diego Velazquez is the last foal out of the mare Sweepstake as she took three years off before getting back in foal. She is now in foal to St. Mark’s Basilica.
